Report of 3 November 2024

Taiwan reported spotting 37 Chinese fighter jets, drones, and other aircraft close to the self-governed island on Sunday during Beijing’s “long-distance” training flights.

In recent years, China has increased military operations around Taiwan to push Taipei to acknowledge its sovereignty claims over the island.

The Chinese planes were seen starting from 9:00 am (0100 GMT) and 35 of them crossed the dividing line between mainland China and Taiwan in the Taiwan Strait, entering Taiwanese airspace on their route to the Western Pacific Ocean, as reported by the defense ministry.

According to the ministry, Taiwan’s military reacted by dispatching aircraft, naval ships, and coastal missile systems.

The workout occurred one day after Taiwan reported spotting a Chinese military patrol near the island including fighter jets and warships, labeled as a “joint combat readiness patrol.”

Earlier, the ministry reported 27 Chinese aircraft and six warships were seen in Taiwan in the 24 hours leading up to 6:00 am on Sunday.

China believes Taiwan is part of its territory and has not ruled out using force to gain control over the democratic island.

Last month, Beijing conducted extensive military exercises near Taiwan, an action that was criticized by both Taipei and its main supporter, the United States.

According to the ministry, Chinese military performed long-range training flights in late September and also launched an intercontinental ballistic missile into the Pacific Ocean.
