Biden’s Commitment to Supporting Ukraine Amidst Global Tensions

During his meeting with European partners in Germany, US President Joe Biden underlined the significance of Western allies continuing to uphold their dedication to supporting Ukraine. His discussions with Chancellor Olaf Scholz of Germany, who is Ukraine’s second biggest provider of military equipment after the US, were important, particularly given the approaching US presidential election. Biden’s visit is overshadowed by the election, as the result may affect future US backing for Ukraine.

Biden convened with French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer to address the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. The discussions took place as the 2024 US election approached, with fears that a potential win by Donald Trump could harm the connections that Biden has established with allies. Trump has previously expressed doubt about supporting Ukraine and NATO, causing concerns about future US participation in global security.

With Ukraine facing a difficult winter, Biden emphasized the importance of maintaining support for the country, despite the high expenses. He emphasized that these expenses are insignificant when compared to the repercussions of residing in a society where aggression reigns supreme.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz reiterated Germany’s pledge to support Ukraine as long as needed, emphasizing a $50 billion global loan for Ukraine, funded by interest from Russian assets that have been frozen. He stressed that it was important for NATO to not get involved in the war in order to prevent the conflict from escalating more.

However, Scholz raised concerns about aspects of Ukrainian President Zelenskyy’s victory strategy and remained steadfast in rejecting the provision of Taurus long-range missiles to Ukraine. Scholz has tended to support Ukraine cautiously, striking a balance between providing assistance and steering clear of getting directly involved in a way that might upset Russia.

Biden’s trip to Germany held importance since he had not gone to Berlin while in office, although he had visited important allies such as Japan, South Korea, and Ukraine. The visit demonstrated unity, as Scholz expressed gratitude to Biden for their strong collaboration.

While visiting, Biden received the highest class of Germany’s Order of Merit, an award that was also given to former President George H.W. Bush for his contribution to German reunification. German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier emphasized the lasting significance of the US-German alliance, acknowledging that the partnership has gone through periods of closeness and distance.

Steinmeier complimented Biden for renewing Europe’s trust in the trans-Atlantic alliance after the tense relations during Trump’s presidency. Steinmeier emphasized the significance of the US and Europe’s mutual relationship, encouraging both to remember their vital partnership.

Biden's Commitment to Supporting Ukraine Amidst Global Tensions

Biden expressed the same thoughts, as he looked back on his extensive political experience and stressed the significance of democracy and alliances. He cited history to emphasize the power of collaboration among democratic countries.

Biden utilized his meetings to address a range of foreign policy matters, such as ensuring Iran is held responsible for its disruptive actions in the region. He expressed gratitude to Scholz for Germany’s assistance in implementing sanctions on Iranian airlines that were supplying weapons to Russia for the conflict in Ukraine.

Regarding the Middle East, Biden urged for peace initiatives after the death of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar, reaffirming his backing for Israel and promoting discussions for a peaceful Gaza going forward. He stressed the importance of taking advantage of this moment to strive for a brighter future free from Hamas.

In the meantime, Trump keeps campaigning on promises that his leadership would have stopped the conflicts in Ukraine and Israel. He claims that if he were president, Russia would not have invaded Ukraine and Hamas would not have attacked Israel. Trump vows to bring the Ukraine conflict to a close and avoid a potential Third World War, emphasizing a focus on American interests and avoiding getting involved in foreign affairs.

Vice President Kamala Harris has continuously expressed her full backing for Ukraine, standing in agreement with Biden on matters related to foreign policy. As the possible replacement for Biden, she would probably uphold the current administration’s positions on Ukraine and Israel. Harris has also stressed the importance of tackling the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, calling for measures to reduce the plight of Palestinian civilians impacted by the current Hamas-Israel conflict.

With the election approaching, the fate of US foreign policy is undecided. Biden and Harris advocate for ongoing international collaboration, while Trump proposes a more isolated approach that could alter America’s global position. The outcomes of the upcoming 2024 election will greatly impact the ongoing disputes and partnerships that Biden and his administration have been striving to uphold.
