Russian President Vladimir Putin has approved a significant defense agreement with North Korea, a pact that emerges alongside reports of Pyongyang sending thousands of soldiers to combat in Ukraine.
Putin finalized the agreement during his trip to North Korea in June, but it needed approval from Russia’s parliament and his signature to take effect.
The signed law ratifying the treaty was posted by the Kremlin on its website on Saturday evening.
The pact solidifies months of enhancing security collaboration between the two countries, which were Communist partners during the Cold War.
North Korea has emerged as one of the most outspoken and significant supporters of Russia’s extensive military campaign against Ukraine.
The agreement requires both nations to extend military support “immediately” if one is attacked by an adversary.
It also obliges them to work together internationally to resist Western sanctions and align their stances at the United Nations.
Putin praised it in June as a “groundbreaking document.”
According to intelligence reports, South Korea, Ukraine, and the West claim that North Korea has sent approximately 10,000 soldiers to Russia to engage in combat against Ukraine.
When questioned publicly regarding the deployment last month, Putin refrained from denying it and instead redirected the inquiry to criticize the West’s backing of Ukraine.
